Price drop on oats, rice, and milk

The LDS Home Storage Center updated their prices two weeks ago. I was pleasantly surprised that the prices have come down on many items. The most substantial discounts are bulk oats (-28%), rice (-35%), dry milk (-44%), and apple slices (-16%). Black beans (+29%), white beans (+10%), and sugar (+26%) on the other hand have gone up. So, if you have the means, I would recommend getting some oats, rice, and milk now. If you were planning on getting some more beans and sugar, you might consider waiting a bit to see if the prices change. I’d buy now regardless of the price if you don’t have any however.

Note that these calculations are based off of my own records where I have been tracking prices for the past six months and only represent bulk quantities. I hope to be able to provide more accurate and detailed alerts in the future as my records cover more time.

Another way to save money is to grind your own flour. Invest in a wheat grinder. The price of flour is twice the price of wheat and I can’t imagine that any of you are baking so much that grinding what you need would be any inconvenience. You also get the important benefits of healthier, non-bleached (not chemically treated and containing more protein) wheat and your body being acclimated so as to avoid appetite fatigue in the event you will have to live entirely off of your storage. I used mine to cook up a delicious batch of whole wheat pancakes for my kids this morning.

  1. Guys, if you’ve read this far stock up now.

I’m still predicting a huge price increase in flour. And I would not be surprised if rice and other staples followed suite after.

  3. downloaded order form but not sure how to order. I’m not a member of the LDS church, so does this mean I’m exempt. From the info. I’ve gathered to get in bulk, I need to go to a distribution center. At LDS catalog there is only 5 things to order. Not sure how to do this. These are great prices and would rather order from a Christian organization. I’m from Ohio if this helps.

  5. Thanks for the heads up. I recently picked up some more black beans. They make excellent chili. Soak overnight, cook beans in pressure cooker for 4 minutes, let pressure drop by itself. Then add your favorite chili fixings.

  7. Wolfe, I too believe that we are about to see prices (especially on wheat) go through up significantly, the price at the Storage Center actually went down $0.15 (per 25 pounds). I was really surprised.

  9. You do not have to be a member of the LDS Church to purchase from the Home Storage Centers. They are open to anyone. They don’t ship orders out however; you have to order and pick up in person. There are two locations in Ohio however:

    6900 Southpointe Pkwy
    Brecksville, Ohio 44141
    (440) 526-4001

    4431 Marketing Place
    Groveport, Ohio 43125
    (614) 836-2627

Note that they only accept checks or exact cash for payment.

Oh, and thanks for recognizing that we are Christians!

  11. Don’t forget, the canning centers are also an integral part of the LDS Church’s welfare program. The prices on canned and pouched products are offered after you provide some service (working a couple hour canning session) helping pack food for distribution. They do allow bulk purchases without a session though.

Also call ahead to arrange if you are planning on doing a session. They have been swamped with people lately, so you need to arrange according to the local centers volunteer numbers, and shipments.

As for the regular catalog, they do have a couple of canned basics they do sell without sessions, those are the ones you see in the regular catalog, with a slight ‘non-volunteer’ price difference.

Just call your closest center, and a volunteer can answer all your questions.

  13. Our cannery in Farmington Hills, Michigan is small and only open to LDS members last time I asked. It is usually booked several weeks to months in advance. The last time I went I just picked up bulk and pre-canned provident living items instead of using the canning equiptment like I usually do. They said that nonmembers can use the equipment if they come with a member. I’m not sure about purchasing bulk supplies like bags of wheat, beans, and boxes of rice, as a nonmember. They would probably be okay with it, but I’d call in advance before making the drive. Hours are also more restricted outside of Utah. Here is the website to find the closest homestorage center in your state. http://www.providentliving.org/location/map/0,12566,2026-1-4,00.html

  15. As usual good stuff from Utah. Thanks Wade, good info and don’t expect sugar to go down anytime soon. Everything I’m finding leads me to believe it will go a good bit higher. Buy now if you need any of this food.
