DHS Preparedness Certification

Does anybody besides me get a bad feeling about this? DHS to push ‘certification’ of private sector preparedness effortsgag-manThat’s right, the Federal government creating another ANSI spec for us to follow, and the management of which will be driven by the same people that helped rescue folks after Katrina.  Of course at first the certification will be completely voluntary, and have various degrees to which you can claim certification.  But what happens afterwards?  Just like any other federal program, it will grow until even simple blogs like this must somehow guard what we say, and be guarded by lawyers lest somebody disagree with our practices.

Now, I’m all for the concept of the government encouraging us to prepare, and to help people know how to prepare.  But in looking at tools such as the DHS’s ready.gov compared to blogs such as us, or those in our blogroll, I know I can get a lot more practical information from the personal experience on the web.  And it hasn’t been sanitized by every scared lawyer, by beuracracies such as the FDA.  So speak up, and make sure this doesn’t become just another overarching act that limits peoples ability to share information.

  1. About that “guard what you say” comment. A model has filed suit vs Google because a blogger called her a skank.

Its already started. I think she went after Google instead of the blogger because Google has money. Of course it follows that someday soon people will sue over blog post and eventually the blogs will fade away.

  3. Yessir, just your friendly neighborhood Nanny.gov once again lookin’ to “protect” us from ourselves… It’s time to stand up and be heard on sooooooooo many different levels…. File this one with NAIS and cow taxes. They’re comin’ for your freedom.

  5. Just another form of “registration” to keep track of the preppers and survivalists. Wonder how many actual preppers or survivalists could get “approved”? Not many I think! The best way to find and keep track of someone is to have them “sign up”. The smart ones will avoid the “registration”.

  7. @Joseph it’s “starting from” the ansi spec, which is ridiculous on it’s own. But telling lawyers to build off of an already crazy spec is a bad thing.

  9. Here is the part of the program that made me stop and think. “1 The Commission specifically advocated that DHS promote a specific standard: The American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) standard for private preparedness. That standard is discussed
below. The Commission also recommended that conformity with that standard define the standard of care owed by a company and its employees for legal purposes, and that insurance and credit-rating
services look closely at a company’s conformity with the ANSI standard in assessing its insurability and creditworthiness.”
So a companies insurability and creditworthiness would partially depend on if it voluntarily met the conditions of a preparedness certification? Doesn’t sound right to me.
