Announcing the First Semi-Annual UtahPreppers 72 hour KitCamp

This is gonna be fun!campzionsmall

There’s a lot to explain here and we’re still figuring out a lot of it, but here’s our plan.

This is going to be a 3 day family survival/training camp – the catch and the point is that you can only bring your 72 hour kit and nothing else. For 3 days you’ll have to survive off of the contents of your 72 hour kit. We’ll have backups of some critical things in case you’ve forgotten anything (we’re not gonna let you die! :) ).

Sometime this spring we’ll meet at a designated car parking location, do a kit inventory to make sure everyone has the absolute necessities and then we’ll hike a few miles to our first camp. Each morning we’ll pack up and break camp and hike a couple miles to the next location. While in camp we will have several camping/survival training sessions designed to teach you how to live off your kit and how to make it last more than 72 hours by living off the land. We’ll cover lots of basics in depth like fire starting, how to set a camp, food preparation, water purification, etc.

The goal of KitCamp is to first help you make sure you know what you want/need in your 72 hour Kit. Second, to help you become (more) confident that you can survive off your kit (this is probably the most important one). Third, to help you learn skills that will help you keep you and your family safe and healthy in an emergency.

Attendance at KitCamp is open to everyone and your entire family is invited. We’ll have expert instructors (including the authors here but others as well) and a well planned out and coordinated camp. We are planning on doing one of these in the spring and one in the fall on a regular basis. Everything for KitCamp is still in the planning stages so if you have any suggestions, please let us know!

We’ll be announcing our first date and meetup location very soon, we’d like to get a list of people who are tentatively interested in attending so if this sounds like a good time to you, please say so in the comments!

  1. I am interested. Right now our 72 hour kit is the “throw it in the back of the van” kind, not the “carry it on your back” kind. This will force us to tighten things up a little.

  3. This is Goozbachs wife. (I’ve actually never called myself Goozbach’s wife, hmmm)

I am curious as to the cost of it? You’re giving up your time and resources, so I’m just wondering what the fee is!

    Thanks boys :)

  5. @charity just ask goozbach about how the Open Source Groups run, it’s the same principle.

We’re learning too, and having fun while doing it. So the concept itself has no cost, we just ask people to participate the same way, become involved. Hopefully others will teach us too.

  7. Jayce^ So you don’t have to go digging through comments on my blog ;)–I’d really love to come. I’m willing to subject myself and even my husband to craziness to learn what we can do better, and I’d even like to take the kids just for fun. More concerned about them being comfortable than me–ages 4, 7, and 9. :)

Shelter is definitely the weak link in my emergency kit. My “plan” for shelter thus far has been to stay put or build something where I end up. I can get kind of crafty with sticks and plastic sheeting–if sticks are available wherever I ended up. My fire/light/heat/clothes/food portions of the pack are all redundant–more than one option. I feel like I need a shelter plan and a backup shelter plan and a backup backup shelter plan. The camp would definitely be worth going if I can get us all to it. I’d love some ideas on shelter in the meantime!

  9. Great idea. Trying to plan something like this in Kentucky. We will be watching your progress and be taking notes and offering suggestions as we learn along the way. Gatherings like this are the best way for us all to learn and develope a real network of preppers. Great job.

  11. Sounds like fun. I’m sure my husband will be up for it, he LOVES camping (he’s the adventurous one in the family). So i don’t normally include a tent in my disaster kit but would I be allowed to bring it … please? lol.

Thanks for not letting my husband down, fellow open sourcers :)
